Finding your passion.
Hello world of opportunities. 👋🏻🌎
Whether you are still in High School, fresh out of college, or all settled into your new house with your new husband, there is always an opportunity to find your passion and chase it with open arms. Are you seeking something that makes you want to jump out of bed everyday? I'm talking about something more than your amazing family, or your adorable dog's wagging tail and smiling face in the morning, but something a bit more personal than that. We all have things that can awaken a part of us that has been dormant for so long, but we must first discover them before we can become enthralled in them.
What is passion? ❤️
One definition of passion is an intense desire or enthusiasm for something. To me, this type of emotion means that you will be giving a part of yourself to whatever you are most passionate about. I believe this to be true when you find something that you cannot live without, and you cannot walk away from. It's a calling of sorts.
I am passionate about many things. I am passionate about my family and friends. I am passionate about my pets and the beautiful place that I live. I am passionate about avocado toast and taco Tuesday. 🥑🌮 Ok..getting a little off topic. 😄
Find the things that you love, the things that feed your soul. ✨
The two main passions in my life are photography and gift giving. Funny thing is, since I was a child I have always hated being in front of the camera, but put me behind it and I am simply in love. I always loved the whole process surrounding photography. Not only did I love capturing moments in time and exploring all of the ways that I could portray a subject in different lighting and various settings, but I was intrigued by all of the elements of photography in those early days. I was always interested in the little black containers that sat on my grandmother's nightstand that the film rolls were stored in. I most impatiently endured waiting for my photos to develop, wondering how they would turn out. I would sit for hours admiring the negative film strips in the sunlight, and compare my work when I got that lovely little envelope back from the photo developer. Over the years, I slowly moved from throw away cameras, to a few point and shoots, before graduating to the SLR game. Now I am obsessed with my beautiful Canon EOS 80D and don't know how I lived so long without this technology. A bit dramatic? Maybe. 📸 I have enjoyed capturing my own memories, but I never knew how much my love for photography would come in handy for J. Isabel Designs. BOOM! 💥 Hobby, turned passion, turned unexpected useful tool for the development of my small business.
Enter passion number 2. If you haven't already read my Grandma's Everlasting Gift post, now would be a good time to check it out! 😉 If you have read it, than you know the sweet story of how my grandmother taught me the art of gifting from the heart. At a young age, I learned that you can really make someone feel special with the right gift. I also learned that it does not have to be something expensive or lavish to make an impact. As I got older, I continued to share my grandmother's passion with the people around me. My friends and family have appreciated their gifts, but it is the practical strangers that I have included in my random gift giving that I feel have truly enjoyed these simple gestures. When my grandmother passed away, I took over where she left off, making all holidays and special occasions large and small, meaningful and fun.
Nobody starts out an expert.
Here is a little reminder that we all start somewhere. When we find something that we love, it does not mean that we are going to be the best at it right away, but if we truly love it, you will discover how much growth you can achieve over time. Here are a few "sunshine" boxes I made for two special people in my life a few years ago. This was way before J. Isabel Designs was even a blip on my radar, but looking back, I know that it was preparing me for amazing things ahead!
Flash forward a few years, and now this is what I do. This is what I love. This is what I am passionate about. As you can tell, I have come a looooong way since those early days! LOL
My advice is this.
My advice to you, my passionate friends, is to take a good look at your life and think about what you love. What could you not do without? What could you do everyday that would make you the happiest person in the world? I'm sure we could all say eating donuts right?! 🍩 Seriously though, I want you to consider your hobbies, your favorite pastimes, and the things that brought you the most joy during your childhood. These could all be things that have been leading you straight to your passion and you didn't even realize it yet. Do you like to draw? Did you like to take photos? Maybe you're really into knitting or coffee mugs? Whatever it is, take the time to explore these small hobbies a little deeper and you never know where it might take you!
